Each February, our nation observes American Heart Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about heart disease and encouraging healthier lifestyles.
For us as a Methodist congregation, this month offers a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the sacred gift of life and the responsibility we share to care for our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit.
❤ Why Heart Health Matters
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. Many of its risk factors—high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, poor diet, and lack of physical activity—are preventable.
Awareness truly can save lives. But beyond the statistics lies a spiritual truth: God created us with purpose, and caring for our physical health is one way we honor that divine intention.
❤ A Wesleyan Perspective on Wellness
John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, believed deeply in the connection between physical and spiritual well-being. He encouraged regular exercise, moderation in eating, and intentional self-care long before “wellness” became a modern concept.
Wesley taught that caring for our bodies is not vanity—it is stewardship. As we observe American Heart Month, we follow in that Wesleyan tradition by taking practical steps to nurture the bodies God entrusted to us.
❤ Simple Ways to Care for Your Heart This Month
Here are a few gentle, achievable practices to consider:
Move with purpose. A daily walk, stretching, or light exercise can strengthen your heart and lift your spirit.
Choose nourishing foods. Incorporate more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and heart-healthy fats into your meals.
Know your numbers. Blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar screenings provide valuable insight into your health.
Manage stress. Prayer, meditation, and quiet moments with God can calm the mind and support heart health.
Stay connected. Strong relationships and community support reduce stress and improve overall well-being.
❤ A Ministry of Care
As a church family, we can support one another in living healthier lives.
This month, consider:
Checking in on a friend or neighbor
Sharing a healthy recipe
Inviting someone to join you for a walk
Attending a health screening or educational event
Praying for those living with heart disease
Small acts of care can make a big difference.
❤ A Prayer for Heart Health
Gracious God, You formed us with care and breathed life into us. During this American Heart Month, guide us toward habits that strengthen our bodies and renew our spirits. Help us support one another with compassion, encouragement, and love.
May our hearts—both physical and spiritual—beat in rhythm with Your grace.
Amen.
