Madison Avenue Community Garden at Story Church
By Diab Dar-Issa and Jennifer Schwelik
November ended the community garden growing season.
A small Harvest Celebration included gardeners weeding and turning over garden soil. A weed barrier of cardboard was put in place. After the first frost, garlic will be sown in the herb garden for spring harvest.
November brought the good news that the Northwest Neighborhood Community Development Corporation awarded a small grant to support the garden efforts.
The grant provides funds to trim the large maple tree, create art for the garden with upcycled items that would have been placed in landfills, create several raised beds, begin a native garden of flowering plants to attract pollinators, and organize regular garden events for the larger community.
2026 garden planning is underway. Watch for announcements to find ways you and your family can help with building, art creation, and preparing seeds and plants for the next season.
