Madison Avenue Community Garden at Story Church

By Diab Dar-Issa and Jennifer Schwelik

Fall is here, and harvesting is underway at the community garden.

This is the first year the lot has been used for gardening in many years.

As an experiment, one plot was set aside with multiple types of vegetables to test the seeds and plants. That plot produced many vegetables, which were given to Twice Blessed Free Store customers.

Lorraine Riebel harvested and organized the vegetables and distributed them to families as they left shopping at TBFS in October.

Gardeners with a surplus were encouraged to share their produce with neighbors or TBFS patrons until the growing season ends.

November begins the late fall season with the planting of garlic, closing most garden plots for the season with newspaper and straw, and beginning plans for the 2026 gardening season.

If you are interested in learning more about gardening vegetables and/or native flowers or assisting in any way, please email Diab Dar-Issa, the garden leader, at garden@storychurchcle.org.
